Artwork description: Working primarily with glass, Erica explores the interaction between light and glass through translucency, layered colour, and depth. Subtle textures embedded within each form emerge gradually as light shifts across the surface. She hope to evoke stillness, serenity and sense of wonder to the audience and encourage slow and attentive looking.
Artwork description long: My practice explores the relationship between light, form, colour and perception through ceramics and glass. I am interested in how subtle changes in geometry, thickness, surface and layering can transform the way an object is seen and experienced. Rather than beginning with a predetermined answer, I begin with questions that emerge through observation and making: what happens when forms overlap, how does light move through an enclosed space, and how can a surface reveal or conceal what lies within? Making is central to my methodology. I work through an iterative process of plaster model making, mould making, lost-wax glass casting and cold working, allowing each stage to generate new observations and questions. I use plaster to develop precise and interlocking forms, while repeated sanding, casting and cold working allow me to gradually understand how small changes affect the final object. The behaviour of glass is an important part of this process. Its response to heat, thickness, texture and light cannot always be fully predicted, so unexpected results often become part of the research rather than problems to be corrected. I see this process as a continuous conversation between myself and the material, where knowledge develops through making, observing and responding. My work often uses contained and overlapping forms to explore the relationship between internal and external space. Through translucent and satin surfaces, light enters, diffuses and reflects within the object, creating shifting boundaries between what is visible and what remains concealed. I am interested in creating a quiet visual experience that encourages the viewer to slow down and look closely. I hope the work creates a moment of attention in which light, colour and material become perceptually active.
