Artwork description: The glass moon installation was inspired by the Chinese poem, “Prelude to Water Melody” written by Su Shi. Since the poem is in a cí style that can also be sung to melody, I created a simplified abstract font of the Chinese characters to resemble music notes and rhythm. In the poem, the poet expresses the missing of his brother during the Mid-Autumn Festival, when families reunite and enjoy the moon. Being relatable to myself, I have been separated from her family and friends for years since I moved to the United States from Hong Kong and now studying in Japan. When I am abroad, I have been noticing the moon more often, which always reminds me of this poem. For me, the moon does not only act as a companion during loneliness, but also a connection between where I am and where I am from.
