Artwork description: Within this piece, I aim to express a conflict between aesthetic design and functionality. As functional glassmakers push their designs and experiment, a collapse of functionality is a likely outcome. With this vessel, I aim to embrace that tension. I draw from the relationship between man-made structures and nature's tendency to overtake them. In this piece, the water pitcher is torch-heated, punctured and stretched while the glass is still moving. The effect freezes glass' fluidity around the structure of the vessel, folding color and playing with light much like a wave. In eliminating the work's functionality, I open myself up to new possibilities for design which celebrates the vessel.
