Artwork description: 'Redundant' is part of a body of work focusing on the complex ties that bind us to past generations, traditions and the physical landscape. It is mixed media piece consisting of a hay fork in cast glass, a wooden handle from our family farm, lead and a round head screw. By using glass, I aim to highlight the fragile connections that exist between our personal histories and by extension our cultural heritage. On the other hand, it’s the durability of glass that also illustrates how strongly these connections are felt by those raised on the land. Although this piece may speak of rose tinted by-gone days in a rural idyll, the memories associated with it are of back backing, labour intensive farm work.
