Artwork description long: I am interested in the way people try to understand ambiguous forms by relating them to something already known. The body is a familiar presence within memory and experience, yet the images it evokes differ from person to person. This work carries a bodily presence without representing any specific body or living creature. The parts that divide downward, the lateral spread, and the central opening each suggest the body, yet they do not resolve into a single image. The thick, transparent glass bends, stretches, and partially distorts the image beyond it through refraction along its curved surfaces. Through the central opening, however, the space on the other side can be seen directly. Distorted views through the glass and unobstructed views through the opening coexist within a single form, causing the viewer’s gaze to move between the object itself and the space beyond it. In the making process, I perceive a bodily presence within the glass as it changes through heat and gravity, and work with its movement to allow the form to emerge.
