Although they formally met societal expectations, she felt they lacked emotional depth, a sense of connection with others, and a dignified way to honor the memory of the deceased. This experience led her to ask whether there might be a more sensitive and meaningful way to process the departure of someone close. Melted responds to these questions through design, offering an alternative to standardized funeral practices. At its center is a ritual aluminum bowl that functions only through the cooperation of multiple participants. Mourners place a candle into the bowl together, hold it over a fire, and watch as the wax melts. They then pour the wax into water, where it solidifies into an organic form as a physical imprint of a shared moment. The resulting wax shape is cast into glass using the lost wax technique. A key part of the concept is that no one is the sole author of the final object: the form emerges by chance, collectively, without control by any single individual. Even the author herself refrains from inserting a personal signature into the work. The final shape arises from collaborative presence, shared gesture, and natural forces. The result is a series of unique glass sculptures that embody presence, touch, transformation, and the fleeting nature of farewell. These objects function both as personal memorials and haptic artifacts, connecting sensory experience, the performative dimension of ritual, and the aesthetics of impermanence. Melted draws inspiration from ancient Slavic rituals, grief psychology, and contemporary approaches to participatory design. It opens space for new forms of mourning outside of conventional templates that support emotional release, connection, and acceptance of loss, with emphasis on human presence and collective experience.
