Geologies of Identity

Artwork description: This pair of blown glass sculptures takes the island as its motif. Blue-green hues evoke both sea and land, while metallic textures suggest mountains and strata. Their differing heights mirror the tensions within Taiwan’s geopolitics and cultural identity. By fusing glass and minerals, the work creates a state of liminality—fragile yet resilient, transparent yet heavy—reflecting Taiwan’s hybridity shaped by overlapping histories of colonization, war, and modernization. More than a depiction of islands, the sculptures propose an “island language” of form: transforming isolation into cultural strength and resonating with global discourses of marginality, diaspora, and hybridity.
