Artwork description: The glass sickle pierces a bag in which coffee beans have been transported to the Netherlands. An aggressive gesture, the glass is as sharp and hard as it is fragile.
The abuses in coffee bean cultivation in which workers, both adults and children, are exploited led to this piece. As a symbol, the sickle refers to labor in the agricultural sector. The energy that is put into the work, its value to the owner of the beans and the vulnerability of the workers can be seen in the glass and bronze of the sickle. The burlap bag is hung from the glass, the portrait of a little boy picking coffee beans, is intertwined with the fibres of the bag in which the beans were transported.
