Artwork description: Crown of Thorns is a functional chandelier with blown glass shades decorated with enamel and a branch-like sculpt wrapped around the found light fixture. One of the focal points for my senior exhibition, Haus of Sticks. The low-fire enamel work on the glass reflects onto the walls creating a forest of shadows.
The chandelier hangs in the center of the room above the scene, emitting its own light. Acting as a physical crown above the scene. It is a beacon of light tangled within a nest of branches and thorns. A crown symbolizes power and royalty but assembled from thorns causes the wearer pain and suffering. The Crown of Thorns within the Bible was an attempt to humiliate Jesus as he was preparing for Crucifixion. However, in Catholicism, the humiliation attempt became a symbol of power because of his sacrifice. Just as the queer community faces ridicule and obstacles, we persist and reclaim words and actions used against us to graciously overcome hate.
